Results of VSTU in all of WPs at 2002 year

Short summary:

        VSTU has been active in the following workpackages: WP1, WP3, WP4 (as coordinator), WP8, WP9, WP10 and WP11.
During the first year of the project the main activities were concentrated on WP1 where VSTU has organized several actions for Russian institutions and SMEs. The main purpose was a distribution of knowledge about modern design methodologies and possibilities of REASON project, EUROPRACTICE program and CAD tools. As result 4 new EUROPRACTICE members were included (in additional 2 – 3 institutions will do it in 2003) from Russia. In additional a series of interviews and inquiries in local electronics industries has been carried out to fix the state in electronics design, and to determine the needs of CAD tools and knowledge to be transferred. The information will be used in organizing special advanced courses for engineers of local SMEs in Vladimir and Moscow Regions of Russia in the future.
        Main activity of VSTU in WP3 was directed on preparation and dissemination of materials in the field of analog and mixed-signal testing. The received results are educational materials, lectures and specifications on software educational purpose tool set, which will be realised in the next project year under the Commission approval. One training course was prepared and delivered. Existing theoretical knowledge and practical skills were proposed to reflect in jointly prepared textbook on different testing problem, targeted mainly on teachers and PhD students.
        VSTU is coordinating the activities in WP4 targeted on training in the fields of Analogue and RF design, design tools, wireless communication system design as well as of modeling and simulation in deep submicron VLSI, low power design and RF IC packaging. During first year of the Project one training course “Second generation of wireless standards (models and implementations)” was organized in Vladimir by VSTU. For the 2003 events were developed some course materials. A special meeting of WP4 partners took place in Minsk during the Starting seminar on March 19. Plan of actions in task 4.4 was developed during first year of the project.
        In the frame of WP10 VSTU developed materials, organised and participated in actions, targeted on dissemination of information about IST activities and also about REASON Project opportunities and results. Special REASON session of Russian national conference, Web-based conference and Annual Information day of TCC were developed and organised. More than one hundred specialists from different regions of European part of Russia took part in these actions. Stuff of VSTU participated in several Conferences organised in the frame of WP10. Five papers in English and more than 20 papers in Russian were published.

The seminar was attended by 18 participants from academic and industrial institutions of European part of Russia.As result of this seminar 3 universities sent application forms to EUROPRACTICE.

Modification of materials and organization of Intensive Seminar “EUROPRACTICE CAD software and Including to the Program” in Tomsk-city for Siberian Regions of Russia. The seminar was attended by 52 participants from academic and industrial institutions of Siberian part of Russia. As result of this seminar 1 university sent application forms to EUROPRACTICE.

Hands-on training in installation and usage of CAD tools in “newcomer” EUROPRACTICE member university (Kovrov State Technological Academy). 6 teaching staff members and PhD students were trained in usage of XILINX CAD tools.

Installing new hardware and software.
2 SUN Blade 150 workstations and 1 Intel workstations were purchased, installed and used for the Project courses, seminars and training. In additional video-projector and Xerox were purchased and used for the Project courses, seminars and training. All of these equipments are used for project’s needs only in the first year of project.
Mentor Graphics CAD tools were purchased for training needs into training actions of others workpackages. These CAD tools were transferred to VSTU free of charge for first year by Moscow distributor of Mentor Graphics company “Inline Group” for educational purposes.
Kovrov State Technology Academy (subcontractor) purchased and installed of XILINX CAD tools

Task 1.2.: Analysis of the needs of local industries in CEE countries

Development and organization of special Information Day “Presentation of Training and Competence Center of VSTU” for SMEs. The seminar was attended by 20 participants from industrial institutions and SMEs of Vladimir and Moscow Regions of Russia. As result of this seminar the local enterprises presented their needs for extension of database. 25.10.2002
Analysis of needs of the local microelectronics industry (SMEs) in Vladimir and Moscow Regions of Russia was carried out by VSTU and KSTA (subcontractor). The preparation of a local electronic enterprises database has started. Interviews with 17 SMEs were organized. The main result of analysis of local SMEs is as follows:
Almost all of them are in need of tighter contacts and relations with VSTU, aiming to update the knowledge, skills and information in the state-of-art Electronics and Microelectronics, modern CAD tools, design methodologies. Many of then asked VSTU to organize the special training courses for SMEs in the their places.

Workpackage 8: Technologies and contents for distance training

Task 8.1.: Analysis of the training needs

The aim of task 8.1 is to define the core skills and methods that should be trained in Web-based courses. Collection and summarizing of experiences: opinions, comments, descriptions of courses, Web addresses and statistics related to the Web-based training were done. In that work organization and providing by VSTU the number of actions in WP1, WP4 and WP10 (courses, seminars, conferences) helped to prepare of surveys. Here is a resume of the needs for Web-based training in the field of SoC and especial in area of WP4, where VSTU is coordinator:

1. Introduction to the capabilities and structure of up-to-date CAD software packages and tools for RF analog and Wireless systems design.
Currently these software packages are available in Russia only at VSTU and the implementation of Web-based technologies will draw the attention of academic and SME staff and will be very useful for the initial familiarization with the packages.

2. Introduction to the models, simulation methods, and design of nonlinear RF circuits and systems in modern EDA tools.
Currently these models and methods are a very difficult, so the knowledge about the methods such as harmonic-balance, shooting and Volterra series will be very useful.

3. Introduction to the digital wireless communications standards, models, design methodologies, and implementations.

In additional together with TUS VSTU ready to prepare the materials for following fields:

4. Systematic and deep knowledge on high-level hardware description languages like VHDL.

5. Methodology for analog IC design.

TheseWeb-based education technologies will be developed in Russia and English versions.

Workpackage 11: Actions addressed to high school students

Task 11.1.: Lectures on state-of-the-art directions in microelectronics and its applications.

Preparations of lectures about Microelectronics in our Life and about Abilities of Computer to Design Devices. Realization of a course from two lectures about modern applications of microelectronic devices, about opportunities of modern computers and areas of their using and also about an urgency of a design problems of electronic devices with the help of a computer. 01.11.2002- 31.12.2002
Preparation and realization of two hour lecture with help of the evident materials and demonstrations during which opportunities of modern systems for the automated designing microelectronic devices were submitted to school children, and also were told about features of work of the designer. After lecture access to computers for performance of two samples for 2 hours everyone on a choice of the school children were given to school children: 1) designing of analog devices with use of Spice-like systems; 2) designing of digital devices with use CAD tools of the Xilinx. 15.10.2002

Organization of school children visits to annual exhibition "New Information Technolo-gies", spent in Vladimir State University with participation SMEs and Electronics Trade Companies.
